How to bath a baby with sensitive skin
On the contrary, their precious skin can often be flaky, dry, scaly and prone to rashes, which means special care needs to be taken, especially at bath time.
Sensitive skin is actually very common in babies. Their skin barrier is not yet developed fully, meaning it’s more susceptible to the elements and to irritants.
But some babies tend to have particularly sensitive skin, which flares up for seemingly no reason at all.
So, how do you care for your baby’s sensitive skin in the bath? Here’s our guide.
1. Use Lukewarm Water
One of the easiest ways to prevent irritation is by ensuring the bathwater is lukewarm, not hot. Water that’s too warm can strip the skin of natural oils, leaving it dry and vulnerable.
A quick tip is to test the water with your wrist or elbow, aiming for a temperature that feels comfortably warm but not hot.
2. Limit Bath Time
Though it’s tempting to linger, especially if your baby enjoys bath time, prolonged exposure to water can be drying. Try to keep bath time around 5-10 minutes, which is usually enough to get your baby clean without causing unnecessary dryness or irritation.
3. Choose a Gentle Bath range
Using products designed specifically for sensitive baby skin is crucial, as it will likely contain fewer ingredients that could irritate delicate skin. The Euky Bear Bath & Body range, for instance, is dermatologically tested and suitable for daily use on dry & sensitive skin.
Euky Bear’s Hair & Body Wash, for example, is free from nasties like nut oils, soap, sulphates, parabens, phthalates, silicone, artificial fragrances & colours.
Just a small amount of product is needed to wash their body and hair, helping maintain the skin’s natural barrier.
4. Avoid Fragranced Products
Fragrance is often one of the biggest triggers for sensitive skin, as it can cause rashes or itching.
Opt for products without artificial fragrances, like the Euky Bear Bath & Body range. With gentle, natural ingredients, these products are designed to cleanse without overwhelming sensitive noses or skin.
Plus, because they’re free from synthetic fragrances and dyes, they reduce the risk of irritation that more strongly scented products might bring.
5. Pat, Don’t Rub, to Dry
After a bath, resist the urge to rub your baby’s skin with a towel. Instead, gently pat dry with a soft, cotton towel.
Rubbing can irritate sensitive skin, especially if it’s already a bit dry from the bath. Patting dry helps to remove excess water without damaging the skin’s protective outer layer.
6. Lock in Moisture
Applying a moisturising lotion immediately after the bath helps lock in moisture, keeping your baby’s skin hydrated and preventing any post-bath dryness or flakiness.
Euky Bear’s Body Lotion is enriched with Organic Kakadu Plum, Rosehip and Jojoba oil plus Vitamin E to hydrate and help bub’s skin retain its natural moisture for 8 hours. Why not try a baby massage with the lotion after their bath, for an extra special bonding moment?
By following these gentle practices, you’re not just keeping your baby’s sensitive skin clean and healthy—you’re creating a calming ritual that both of you can look forward to.
