How to choose the best baby bath products
Choosing the best baby bath products: it sounds like it would be easy but if you’ve seen the amount of options available, you’ll know it can be trickier than it looks!

With the sheer amount of choice and different label claims, it can end up a bit daunting for new parents.

Choosing the best baby bath products for their delicate skin is quite important. But don’t stress, we’ve got you! Here are the 4 main things to look out for.

1. Dermatologist testing

Regardless of type, all babies’ skin is ‘sensitive’!

That’s because infant skin is still developing in the first few months of life. The skin is thinner, more fragile – you can feel it’s almost like tissue paper when they’re newborns. Because of this their skin is less resistant to bacteria, irritants and allergens that may penetrate the skin and cause irritation.

You may choose to use what your hospital recommends in the first few weeks, or simply water - but when you do choose a product range, always look for ‘Dermatologist Approved/ tested’ and ‘Kind to Sensitive Skin’ claims on pack.

These products, like the Euky Bear Bath & Body range, must undertake rigorous independent testing to prove they are non-irritating to sensitive skin.

2. What’s not in it?

You expect to see a full list of ingredients on your baby bath products, but you should also be aware of what to avoid.

Some ingredients may irritate or dry baby’s skin, others are allergy triggers and some aren’t great for the environment. Here are the main ingredients to look out for.

X Nut oils
X Soap
X Sulphates
X Parabens
X Phthalates
X Silicone
X Artificial fragrances
X Artificial colours

Artificial fragrances are especially important to avoid for newborns, and even some essential oil formulas should only be used after 6+ months. Check the label for age recommendations.

Euky Bear’s Bubble Bath and Hair & Body Wash are suitable for all ages – pH balanced, tear-free and with no artificial fragrances, they contain none of the nasties on the list.

3. Consider after bath care

After-bath care is just as important as bath time! A good moisturiser is vital to help protect baby’s delicate skin barrier and prevent dryness.

According to the Royal Children’s Hospital, contamination can be an issue with moisturising products in jars. They recommend using a spoon rather than fingers if you’re using a jar product, or choosing a hygienic ‘pump pack’ instead – like Euky Bear’s Body Lotion.

Euky Bear’s Body Lotion is enriched with organic ingredients like Kakadu Plum, plus baby-friendly oils like jojoba, Vitamin E and Rosehip. These intensely nourishing ingredients help baby’s skin retain its natural moisture for up to 8 hours.

4. Know what’s important to you

Having a baby means looking at the world with a whole new set of eyes. All of a sudden our choices make a difference – not just to our world, but to the world we’re leaving for our little ones.

It’s often a time when parents reassess their shopping habits and start making more sustainable and ethical purchase decisions.

Here are a few things you might consider when choosing the best baby bath products:

Country of origin – Are the products Australian made & owned?

Ingredients – Does the company try and source its ingredients locally (where possible), sustainably and ethically?

Cruelty free – Does the brand test on animals, and is the product vegan friendly?

Recyclability - Is the packaging recyclable? Is the brand working towards more eco-friendly, sustainable packaging solutions?

One way to check this is to ask if their parent company is a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC). This not-for-profit organization holds companies accountable to eco-friendly standards against which they are regularly reviewed.

Associations – Which charities or organisations does the company align itself with? For example, Euky Bear bath products support the Eczema Association of Australia.

When you find a range of products that ticks all your boxes, it helps make the decision a lot easier.
